Meet the team

Otherwise known as "Sharky", Dr Singh joined the Strubens Valley Animal Hospital team in January 2023. After completing his BVSc in 2007, Dr Singh has honed his skills both nationally and internationally. Initiating his career in his native province of Kwa-Zulu Natal, he then moved on to Essex, UK where he practiced as a Sole Charge Veterinarian, before returning home to South Africa in 2012. Dr Singh has since practiced in various local hospitals, his last service of 10 years being in a Specialist Hospital, with his journey finally leading him to Strubens Valley Animal Hospital. Whilst Dr Singh practices all aspects of animal healthcare and Small Animal Surgery, his core focus and skills lie in Small Animal Dentistry. He has been married to his high school sweetheart for almost 10 years and they have two boys, one Miniature Schnauzer, one Bull Mastiff and a rescue cat. Dr Singh and his family spend their time enjoying the comfort of their home, be it with a simple board game or supporting the greatest soccer team in the world, Liverpool, and off course, fitting in a round of golf where possible.
Dr Robert Fouche, best known as "Dr Rob", joined the Strubens Valley Animal Hospital team in February 2023. He completed his BSc Animal Science in 2010 and graduated from Onderstepoort (OP) in 2015. He started off his career as a State Vet, assisting under privileged communities in Bloemfontein. He later returned to Gauteng where he has been based for his most recent years. Dr Rob has a keen interest in surgery, particularly, orthopaedic procedures. Happily married to his high school sweetheart for almost 20 years, they are proud dog parents to a mischievous lab-spaniel cross. Dr Fouche and his family spend time together outdoors, overland travelling, birding and wildlife photography.
Born and raised in Roodepoort, Gauteng, Dr Carien van der Merwe completed her Bachelor’s in Veterinary Science from the University of Pretoria and graduated as a veterinarian in 2019. Following her graduation, she completed her Compulsory Community Service (CCS) year in 2020 in Frankfort, Free State, then commenced working in private practice. Carien knew she wanted to become a vet since grade 5, initially interested in wildlife (Steve Irwin being her inspiration). During her studies Dr van der Merwe soon discovered her passion for small animals. As a vet her job incorporates many roles. What Carien most enjoys is providing owners with knowledge on primary animal health care, laying down the foundation for a happy, healthy life for her patients, living the quote: "be the change you want to see in the world." Dr Carien is surrounded by her many pets, each having their own special place in her heart. When not running around the clinic, you can find Dr Van Der Merwe behind the lens of her camera – whether in her back yard or in the Kruger National Park. She also enjoys writing poems and binge-watching series. Always hard at work, Dr Carien!
Dr Kirsten Houston completed his BVSc and graduated from Onderstepoort at the University of Pretoria in 2020. He spent his year of Community Service (2021) applying his skills at Thaba Nchu, Free State. Dr Kirsten joined the Strubens Valley Animal Hospital team in 2022. He hails from Kokstad, Kwa-Zulu Natal and believes that his exposure to a wide variety of animals in this small, farming community is the driving force to his career ambition of being a veterinarian. Kirsten says that the reward of being of service to his patients, serves as an affirmation of his career choice. Whilst he has a keen interest in medical work ups and enjoys soft tissue surgery, Dr Kirsten's key underpinning is to bring healing to his patients in all aspects of his medical expertise, and in turn, bring comfort to their "parents". His love and dedication to animals extend beyond his work. He and his partner, a practicing veterinarian too, are proud parents to a German Shepard, Ares. When he's not a vet, he enjoys the outdoors and is an avid sportsman.
